about

There comes a time in ones life that you meet someone/something that has an affect on your life. Back in early 2001 I had the mixed pleasure of recording the Hawaiian Crow on the Big Island. The bird was being propagated in captivity. The Crow was extinct in the wild and only 24 of these incredible creatures existed in captivity. While listening to its Vocals as I sat there recording 50 feet from their enclosure, I cried. Tears of sadness ran down my cheeks as I was listening to possibly the last calls of these birds on this Planet. It was a very moving experience.
Back in early 2006 I recorded the endangered Yucatan Wren. This bird is going the same way as the crow. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, and is only found on the narrow coastal strip of the northern Yucatán Peninsula. One of the key habitats of this species is the Petenes mangroves ecoregion of the Yucatan coast. It is threatened by habitat loss.
I recorded this close family unit with a couple of bird biologists who had kindly found the wrens one morning in the Yucatan.
The sounds I have with me now leave me wondering how long it will be before these wonderful birds will follow the Hawaiian crow and others like it into oblivion. As we continue to fester this planet and populate it with the millions of irresponsible people who have kids, I wonder who will give a thought to this marvelous bird...
